Sweet Chestnut groves are coppiced on a 14 year cycle here, a process that has been done for at least 600 years. Originally used by the Kentish hop farmers for giving the hop plants something to grow up. It was also a fuel for the iron industry. Now, once dried and chipped the wood is used in Scotney Castle’s biomass boiler to provide hot water and heating for the property. Coppicing also allows extra light to reach the forest floor, which encourages plant diversity and increases habitats for a huge range of wildlife.
